Project overview

A classic look depends on straight lines.

A classic white Shaker kitchen with a subway tile splashback that runs from the benchtop up around the window frame and into the reveal.

The window was not centred on the sink, so the tile layout was centred on the window instead. That keeps the courses looking even around the frame, where your eye goes first.

The subway tile wraps into the window reveal with bullnose edges, so there are no visible cut edges.

How the work is done

A controlled sequence, not guesswork on the wall.

Every stage is checked before the next begins — the finish is only as good as the work underneath it.

  1. 01

    Centre on the window

Set out the courses from the window centre line, because that is where the eye goes first.

  2. 02

    Level first course

Set the first course from a laser line, not the benchtop, so courses stay level across the room.

  3. 03

    Wrap the reveal

Returned the tile into the window reveal with bullnose edges for a clean finish.

  4. 04

    Seal the junctions

Finished the benchtop and sink junctions with flexible white silicone.
